Remembering William Goffman: Mathematical information science pioneer
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper reviews the career and legacy of William (Bill) Goffman, who served as a researcher, Professor, Dean and Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, from 1959 to 2000. Goffman pioneered mathematical information science broadly and in several key areas. First, he applied disease epidemiology concepts to model accurately the spread of knowledge and the formation of knowledge systems and their ecologies, including the dynamics of scientific discovery. Second, he proposed significant improvements in information retrieval through the deployment of multi-valued logic, appropriate file ordering, effective and efficient retrieval measures, and simplified retrieval approaches, including early work in citation-based searching. Third, Goffman applied Bradford-like distributions to model effective core research literature collection development and usage. Fourth, he developed original epidemiology models, and was an early contributor in biomedical informatics. His mathematical contributions have stood the test of time and will continue to be appli-

The Epidemiology of Knowledge and the Spread of Scientific Information
People commonly refer to “infectious” slogans, “catchy” phrases, or ideas that “spread like wildfire. ” These everyday expressions indicate a basic similarity between the dissemination of ideas and the transmission of disease—both are natural processes in which something is communicated, that is, transferred from one person to another. When a disease spreads quickly and infects many individuals...

متن کاملRemembering the Important Things: Semantic Importance in Stream Reasoning
Reasoning and querying over data streams rely on the ability to deliver a sequence of stream snapshots to the processing algorithms. These snapshots are typically provided using windows as views into streams and associated window management strategies. In this work, we explore a general notion of semantic importance that can be used for window management of RDF streaming data using semantically...
متن کاملToward a Science of Silence: The Consequences of Leaving a Memory Unsaid.
Silence about the past permeates acts of remembering, with marked mnemonic consequences. Mnemonic silence-the absence of expressing a memory-is public in nature and is embedded within communicative acts, such as conversations. As such, silence has the potential to affect both speakers-the source of the silence-and listeners-those attending to the speaker. Although the topic of silence is widely...
متن کاملThe race to new mathematics of brains and consciousness - A tribute to John G. Taylor
This contribution presents a review of mathematical approaches to modeling brains and higher cognitive activity, including consciousness. We dedicate this paper to John Gerard Taylor on the somber occasion of remembering his lifelong contribution to science, with a focus on his pioneering work on neural networks and brain studies.
